Internal medicine is the practice of adult primary care medicine.
We often will be the first stop for one of our patients with a new medical problem. If the complexities of the problem or the skills needed to manage it are outside our training, then we will refer a patient to the appropriate specialist.
We generally do not see people under 18 years of age, do not do surgery, and do not practice obstetrics.
Examples of the problems we commonly manage include hypertension, diabetes, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, asthma, emphysema, thyroid conditions, headaches, musculoskeletal pain, depression, anxiety, infections, minor injuries, and others.
An internist is trained in depth in assessing and managing a wide spectrum of adult medical conditions.
